Gorilla Mindset by Mike Cernovich Helps Control Your Emotions (Review)

Gorilla Mindset is the first mindset book by Mike Cernovich: author, lawyer, and owner of Danger and Play. In addition to mindset enhancement exercises, Cernovich also includes related topics discussing lifestyle, fitness, and more.

The most important thing for you to know is that Gorilla Mindset is not a typical self-help book. The text on its own will not motivate you to be a better man. Your life will not improve by simply absorbing the words on the pages.

Gorilla Mindset is a workbook. It is a toolbox, that gives you a starting point to “dominate and unleash the animal inside you.” However, it is up to you to fill out the worksheets, to determine the best use of those tools.

Gorilla Mindset Cultivation

The first part in creating the Gorilla Mindset involves managing your “self-talk.” Most people regularly engage in negative self-talk. You’ve likely berated yourself after bungling an interview question. This is disempowering behavior.

Cernovich suggests you remember your negative self-talk, consider how it made/makes you feel, and then flip it into an empowering phrase.

For the sake of an example, here are my notes from when I first read it:

  • Negative Talk: “It’s too much work. It’s overwhelming. It’s pointless and it’s not going to work.”
  • How it makes me feel: I feel like I can’t get started, and when I do I won’t gain a deep enough understanding of what I’m learning to really succeed. I feel trapped in a position I don’t want to be in.
  • Empowering phrase: “Your endeavors are a means to a greater end. Keep your eyes on the prize, and you will gain what you desire.”

The most important line to consider in this chapter is “If you talked to your friends like you talk to yourself, you wouldn’t have any friends.”

The next chapter covers frame control, which is an absolute game-changer. Framing regards how your mind perceives whatever situation you are in.

For example, consider your current place of employment. If you hate your job, well, that’s pretty normal, but you gain nothing by wallowing in negativity about it. Think of the positive aspects of the job. Are you working with an old friend? Are you learning a new skill that transfers to other career opportunities? Are you building a stronger body in the process? Put those thoughts at the forefront. That is the power of reframing.

The following two chapters cover checking in/mindfulness and state control. You become more mindful by “checking in,” being mindful of what you’re doing, and being mindful of your surroundings (like Batman).

State control requires taking all of your knowledge from the previous sections (self-talk, frame, and mindfulness), and combining them into one major exercise, which is to be performed regularly.

The next aspect of the Gorilla Mindset, Cernovich states, is to reclaim your focus. Ask yourself what you want from life, and then consider if your activities, habits, and acquaintances get you further to your goals. If not, then act accordingly.

Cernovich Provides More Ways to Further the Gorilla Mindset

The rest of the book veers away from the subject of mindset explicitly, and covers topics which can impact your mindset.

In the lifestyle chapter, Cernovich describes a number of habits that enhance your newfound Gorilla Mindset. Cernovich discusses how you can improve your sleep quality, since you spend about a third of your life sleeping. He talks about the importance of morning routines and brain warm-up exercises to help you get your day started. Another useful idea is to take a cold or contrast shower. In addition to improving circulation, which facilitates post-workout recovery, it also helps you build mental toughness. A few other benefits I’ve noticed: cold water won’t dry out your skin like hot water, and you will save money on your water and heating bills. (I don’t know anyone who takes twenty minute cold showers, do you?)

Cernovich covers the importance of exercise and nutrition. He also recommends a variety of supplements for overall health and mindset. The posture exercises are very helpful for opening up your body and engaging in dominant body language. When I do them, I can’t help but smile. You’ll feel great when you do them, too.

Conclusion

Gorilla Mindset will help you attain the life that you want. It will not give you that life, but it will get you on the right track. You have to work for it.
